What is a Paddock Paradise?

Along with the emergence of the Natural Horsemanship movements, came innovative ideas about housing, feeding and maintaining horses. Instead of individual stabling in a stall, keeping them outside in herd conditions is the ideal. Lots of roughage and little or no concentrate is much better suited to the horse’s original diet. A wild horse walks many miles daily and grazes up to 18 hours a day in the process; a life in a stable with the occasional feed obviously does not mesh well with that.

Several years ago, a new form of housing was developed: the paddock paradise. In this process, horses are encouraged to walk around by building a path around the property; hay, sleeping areas and shelter options are provided in various places.

At VAN STAL the horses are always outside together in such a paddock paradise. They have their own permanent herd, within which they can maintain their own ranking and friendships. Of course, they have access to shelter from severe weather and strong winds. Even in summer, when it is very hot, they like to seek shelter there from the sun and insects.
