The dog is man’s best friend… Right?

We all love our dogs, but sometimes things don’t quite go as you imagined. Maybe your dog is doing things that cause you trouble as an owner—jumping up, barking, destroying things, running off, not listening, eating things off the street, and so on. No big deal for the dog, but definitely annoying for you.

At the same time, there are many situations where the dog is the one experiencing a problem and, as a result, displays unwanted behavior—like aggression or fear.

At Van Stal, we help you and your dog find solutions together. We specialize in complex behavioral issues such as leash reactivity, chasing cars/people/dogs/horses, separation anxiety, and other forms of (fear-based) aggression or frustration. We use positive training methods focused on the dog’s well-being. This means we do not use correction, force, or any other method that suppresses behavior or emotion.

Want to know more about our philosophy? Read more about welfare-based dog training here.

We’re also certified by the Animal Welfare Quality Mark, and our behaviorists are registered with NVGH and SPPD. This means dogs with insurance are (partially) reimbursed for behavior therapy programs.

Our Approach

Every private training program begins with an initial consultation lasting two hours. You’re also welcome to speak with us by phone first, to get an idea of what to expect. Before the consultation, we ask you to fill out a questionnaire at home. It can be helpful to send us videos of the problem behavior as well, so we can start assessing the underlying causes.

During the first consultation, we’ll work together to uncover the root of the issue. We’ll discuss possible solutions and give you some practical tools to start working on right away. Together, we’ll decide which follow-up program suits you and your dog best.

During the hands-on training sessions, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your dog’s behavior. Why is your dog acting a certain way? What emotion is behind it? And how can you learn to respond effectively?

You’ll learn to think consciously and constructively—not just about stopping unwanted behavior, but about redirecting it in a positive way.
Dog training will take on a whole new meaning, and you’ll gain real insight into your dog.
We’ll teach you to see through the eyes of a trainer—so that one day, you won’t need us anymore.

Van Stal has various training spaces that can be fully enclosed, allowing us to work safely and in a controlled environment on behavioral issues. Whatever challenges you and your dog are facing, we have the tools to help. If your dog is anxious or you’re unable to travel to Van Stal, no worries—we also offer home visits.

PLEASE NOTE!
Even behavior that seems harmless at first can eventually turn into a persistent, embarrassing, or even dangerous problem.

Don’t Wait—Ask for Help in Time!

Preventing behavioral issues is truly the best form of prevention.
We know it’s not always easy to ask for help. Life gets busy, and the unwanted behavior isn’t always constant, so it’s easy to put things off. Or maybe your dog’s behavior has escalated to a point where you feel ashamed—and that’s been holding you back from seeking support.

Whether it’s a serious behavioral issue or something that seems minor, most problems start small. You might be running out of patience, but you’re still waiting—until things really start to spiral. The longer you wait, the longer the road to change becomes.

This also applies to things like trauma or fear. After a negative experience, a dog can quickly develop aggressive responses. That doesn’t mean your dog is aggressive. Your dog is still the same sweet companion—but may be struggling with certain situations or stimuli. Don’t wait too long—reach out. We’re here to help you and your dog.
